Soundwaves is delighted to launch a collaboration with the Jacaranda Music series, presenting free previews of selections from their regular season events. This first installment draws from their “Premonitions I & II” programs on Feb. 3, which include work by Georg Friedrich Haas, Pavel Haas, Gustav Mahler, and Jörg Widmann.
The Library welcomed Brightwork New Music for a diverse program of modern and contemporary compositions.
Sweet Air – David Lang (quintet)
Charme – Gérard Grisey (solo clarinet)
Rondeau in Honor of Fragonard from Varied Trio – Lou Harrison (violin and piano)
Mirrors – Kaija Saariaho (flute and cello)
Birds in Warped Time II – Somei Satoh (violin and piano)
Parallel Divergence – Takuma Itoh (quintet)
Soundwaves teams up with the Angel City Jazz Festival for the first time to host their exciting Young Artist Competition.
Four bands, with all players under 24, will each perform a 20 minute set. A panel of experts will choose the winning combo, who will receive $1500 and get to open for Azar Lawrence on the 5th at LACMA. One musician will also win a scholarship to the UCSD Jazz Camp.
Because there will be 80 minutes of music, this show will begin at 7 rather than the usual 7:30pm.
